11/30/2023 0 Comments Steam sales timesI've used this example 3 times already in this thread, but if a store has a Black Friday sale and sells a pair of shoes for $10 (MSRP $60) and you don't buy them, you can't complain if you come back a week or two later and they're still on sale but for $15 instead of $10. Shit, I was surprised they even got a 10% discount, because I expected no discount.Īnd people complaining that some games aren't as cheap as they've been in previous sales are just as frustrating. People were shocked/offended that GTA V or The Witcher 3 didn't go on sale for 50% off despite the fact that both are extremely new to PC (yes GTA V is 2 years old but the PC port isn't). It's getting old seeing "Steam Sale sucks this year" posts all over Reddit. Hey, I'm 22 and haven't known PC gaming prior to Steam (I've only had a gaming-capable PC for ~6 years) and I totally agree with you. That's why the phrase 'comparison shopping' exists in the first place. Just because something is 'on sale' doesn't mean that the price is substantially better than usual. As a consumer, you should always be wary you should always do your homework. I'm not saying that there haven't been incidents with particular games and that everything is perfect with Steam, but the pricing tactics people are seeing with some publishers are nothing new in the world of retail. Every perceived slight is met with extreme rhetoric and a call to arms against the evil oppressor until the mob gets its way. If they don't, it's just a twitter campaign away. Nowadays it seems people believe that they own developers they paid $10 or $20 for the game, so they should get everything they want. If I can put on my crotchety old-man hat for a moment, I really do believe that the most vocal of complainers are likely from the age bracket who have never known a PC gaming landscape WITHOUT Steam. Frankly, I'm really tired of this entitled attitude I'm seeing more and more of amongst certain gamers. TLDR: This year's sales aren't nearly as bad as you think they are.įree wouldn't be good enough for some people. The system allows for niche games to get a market and hold it without compromising for publishers. A lot of great games this past few years (Starbound, Space Engineers, Kerbal Space Program, Craft the World, to name just a tiny portion), would have likely had far more difficult being made (if they were made at all) without having early access backers to help them along. Not to mention the fact that there's nothing inherently wrong with early access as a thing. Today, there were 24 games on sale, not including early access games. We can pick up a bundle of games for $1 min on HB and suddenly a year-old title going for 70% is an awful deal.Īlso, I'd like to address the gripes about early access games being included in the sales real quick - even taking into account early access games, we're seeing more games per day on sale than in any Steam sale that I can remember. The sales are just as good, if not better, than they've always been - we're just becoming desensitized to sales because they're happening everywhere and often. Almost three times as many.Įven the acclaimed Summer Camp Sale of 2011 (my personal favorite, if only for the metagame), had only three or four games on sale for 75% or above daily, give or take a few. In today's sale alone, we have 14 games that are on sale for 75% off less or more. Look at the prices in this image, from the 2012 Steam summer sale - out of nine games, only five are discounted by 75% or above. It's getting kind of exhausting, as someone who has been partaking in Steam summer sales since pretty much the beginning, to hear people panning the sales as "awful" every day when history proves otherwise.
